The Idea

The team’s goal was to create awareness of the different nationalities in their school and to develop a more welcoming atmosphere for students from different countries.

The Action

The team created a once a week lunchtime club in which the transition year students buddy up with a scholar who struggles with English. They read together to improve their English. A wall-hanging for the school entrance is being produced with different flags and ‘hello’ written in different languages.

The Impact

Each classroom now has a placemat containing various statements and questions in the most popular languages in their school. They have created and designed a wallet-sized card for teachers with “Hello, how are you?” in different languages. Teachers can easily access these cards and make a new student feel welcome as soon as they come in through their classroom door. At the end of each school day, the principal of Errigal College begins his intercom announcements by saying ‘hello’ in a different language.
