The Idea

The main aim of their YSI project was to raise awareness of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and its dangers. The team wanted to broaden people’s knowledge on Carbon Monoxide (CO), as well as to bring in a stricter legislation to carbon monoxide alarms (same as smoke alarms) to ensure that every home and public building in Ireland has a CO alarm installed.

The Action

They worked with organisations such as the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and Gas Networks Ireland. They also received support from local and national newspapers and radio stations. The Health Service Executive (HSE), the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), Poison Control Ireland and vaious hospitals have provided the team with valuable information and support.

The team has emailed hotels and nursing homes across the country regarding their compliance with the law on Carbon Monoxide Alarms. They have been on radio stations and in newspapers to raise awareness among the Irish population. They stuck up posters in shops in their local area and handed out leaflets.

The Impact

The team from Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School collaborated with local businesses in producing vouchers which gave people the opportunity to buy Carbon Monoxide alarms, at a generous discount. They have held a table quiz for first and second years students in their school and raised a significant amount of money which was donated to the local Fire Station. They will continue to raise awareness through social media and by lobbying the government until there is a change.
