The Idea

The aim of Disability Accessibility is to raise awareness about disabled parking and the access to local facilities for people with disabilities.

The Action

In order to examine the services provided to wheelchair users in its locality, the Disability Ability team provided two of its team members with wheelchairs for a day and recorded all the problems that they faced. From this research, the team identified a need to provide information to people about accessibility options in their area. Team members monitored local wheelchair parking spaces and took a tally of how many times people misused them. They then worked with local businesses to determine where disabled parking spaces are available locally, and then created an app that will allow people to find wheelchair access spots. The app also contains a map displaying disabled parking spots. The team held a wheelchair basketball tournament with support from the Irish Wheelchair Association, which helped to raise awareness of the issue while raising money.

The Impact

The project team continue to campaign for more accessibility options in their local area and have recently competed in a county level wheelchair basketball competition. The team pitched to the YSI Den, and have used the funds raised to continue with the development of their accessibility app, with the aim of launching it nationally.
