The Idea

This group chose to investigate, promote and revise sexual health education to make it a more approachable topic for students to discuss with parents, guardians and teachers. They hoped to raise awareness within their school, at a local level and at a national level.

The Action

They wanted to promote and ensure the implementation of the current curriculum that is in place or get the current curriculum improved/updated because they felt that there was a lack of sexual education in schools and that the current syllabus was not being used and implemented correctly.

They also hoped to gain an understanding about how much teenagers actually knew about sexual health and where they were getting this information from. They felt that there was a stigma attached to talking about sexual health education matters in Ireland which may have very negative consequences for teenagers and parents if the matter was not approached in a mature and honest way.

It had come to their attention that teenagers were learning about sexual health and relationships through the media and what they saw online and on television. They felt that this was only making the problem worse as it was not a reliable source from which to be educated on sexual health.

The Impact

They planned to send a report of their finding on the issues to the Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly and to the Department of Education.
