Cheerful Changing

Issue of Social Concern:The number of students has expanded in our school but the school building has not. There is a lack of room for all PE students in the changing rooms, shower rooms take up half the changing rooms but are not in use. Very dull and demotivating colour scheme; concern expressed by all students and results in reluctance to partake in PE.
Goal of Project:To expand the space in changing rooms by removing showers and wall, putting in more seating to improve comfort of students while changing (this will provide much needed work for local builders and carpenters) paint and decorate it with sporting murals to make more attractive and appealing to students; will benefit all 500 students in school who participate in PE and encourage participation in physical activity which is proven to improve health and even study skills.

SMILE - Promoting Positive Mental Health

Issue of Social Concern:The mental well being of the staff and students of Gorey Community School will be our focus. Tragedy has struck this school several times in the past few years which has prompted us to understand more about mental health and the steps we can take to ensure no body suffers in silence. We wish to investigate what structures are in place for young people who need support. Hopefully team up with a support group to develop events in our school both to raise awareness and erase the stigma attached to the label of mental health.
Goal of Project:As mentioned we hope to survey the student population to get an overall picture of our student and staff body, their attitudes to mental health. How aware they are of where they can turn to for help and understand where they would rate themselves on the positive mental health scale.Following from this we hope to invite some specialist speakers in to discuss mental health in Ireland. Then plan events in our school and possibly wider local area to raise awareness and support to locally based groups. We have already submitted an application to Headstrong and O2 with the aim of getting extra support in our project and are awaiting a decision on this.
