Animal Cruelty

Issue of Social Concern:To raise awareness about animal cruelty as it tends to get common around this time of year, and is getting even more common lately.
Goal of Project:By studying many different factors such as getting a dog licence every year per dog. We also looked at animals being kept in good conditions and dying in humane ways. We also looked at hens being treated poorly by living in cages smaller than an A4 page, leaving the eggs not to be free range. We will also be looking at different topics as the project progresses.

Don't Raise Your Hand to Domestic Violence

Issue of Social Concern:Domestic violence: we are particularly looking for the silence surrounding this to stop where awareness needs to be created most e.g. men as victims of domestic violence.
Goal of Project:We hope to attain the actual definition of domestic violence. Collect statistics and facts surrounding domestic violence at a national level and at a local level if possible. Become aware of the sensitivities surrounding domestic violence and how these must be always be considered throughout our YSI Project (*this could be a sensitive topic for students in our class, school and people in the local area). Analyse the different types of domestic violence. Identify the signs of domestic violence. Study the role of alcohol and drugs in domestic violence. Examine the effects of domestic violence on the victim, their children and society. Identify the support services that deal with domestic violence at a national level and at a local level. Explore the role of local support services in addressing domestic violence. Learn about the role of the law in dealing with domestic violence in Ireland. Scrutinize and discuss a way that we can create more awareness about domestic violence in our school and locality e.g. leaflets, poster competition awareness week, information link on school website lantern launch, remembrance service/garden etc. Generate ideas around the possibility of working with people affected with domestic violence or getting involved with support groups mentioned above (* we are aware of the sensitivities involved in this and so may have to approach this in a different way).

E-race Racism. Just Rub It Out!

Issue of Social Concern:We will be exploring the issue of racism in Ireland and in our local town. We have noticed that there is a lot of bad feeling towards foreigners in our community and nationally since the beginning of the recession. Also through our community work to date we have met many children in pre-schools who have recently arrived to Ireland. These children speak little or no English and experience language barriers every day.
Goal of Project:We hope to tackle the issue of racism, stereotypes and prejudice in our community. We will do this in two ways. 1. By highlighting the issue and creating awareness and positive attitudes to cultural diversity and 2. by working closely with our local primary school and playschools to help new arrivals/foreign nationals adapt to their new English speaking home.
