YSI students of Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy aim to combat regional homelessness this year.
The project entitled ‘Homeless Not Helpless’, focuses on giving a helping hand to those on the streets. Inspired by the recent harsh winters, the project attempts to raise awareness, reduce stereotypes and help the homeless survive the difficult winter months.
As part of the project, one student impersonated a homeless person on the bridge of Fermoy. This was done to combat stereotypes in the community. Many people were unaccustomed to seeing a homeless teenager sitting on plastic bags on the bridge. Most reactions were of shock and surprise, as proven by a survey taken by the YSI students afterwards.
On Wednesday, December 7th, Niamh Quain, the education officer of Cork Simon Community spoke to first, second and TY students on life on the streets. She spoke about the different services of the organisation, its aims and programmes within the Simon. The TY students were especially interested to discover that there is a misperception in society that these people are victims of their own demise.
Members of the Y.S.I, team ran a four mile run on Sunday last and all proceeds were given to the Simon Community. Approximately 270 people attended the event near the Marina in Cork City. Another way the Y.S.I, group aims to aid the homeless is by distributing packs to them, filled with items that are considered necessary for life on the streets. Items include: Blankets, deodorant, old coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
