Saving Private Parts

Good Counsel College, New Ross, Co. Wexford

This YSI project aims to start a new campaign in the school to raise awareness about testicular cancer. The class set about brainstorming earlier at the beginning of the year and decided to concentrate on raising awareness about testicular cancer and to encourage regular screening and checking to ensure early detection.

The Legacy Suicide Leaves in its Wake for Families and Communities

Breifne College, Cootehill Road, Cavan

This YSI project aims to address the issue of suicide, in particular the affects that the aftermath of suicide has on family and friends. The group was interested in this issue because so many people are affected by suicide yet often times they aren’t thought of.

Because of You

St. Angela’s College, Co. Cork

The team wanted to promote positive relationships amongst teenagers and to demonstrate that all teenagers deserve to be treated well in a relationship. The aim was to raise awareness about abusive relationships and give people the courage to break away from unhealthy relationships.

I Swing that Way?

St Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties, Co. Donegal

The students focused on the subject of homophobic bullying in secondary schools. Information was collected from Glen and BeLonG To websites, from equality documents, newspapers and magazines. The team also contacted an Advocacy Officer from BeLonG To and a Director in Donegal Youth Council.

Divert Your Stride from Suicide

Mount Mercy College, Cork, Co. Cork

This project aimed to promote awareness about the growing and tragic issue of suicide. The team aimed to break the silence around the issue and to encourage people to communicate openly about the subject. The students researched the issue using a variety of methods which included sourcing and reading articles on suicide prevention and inviting guest speakers to talk to the team and other students. They also carried out a survey in several different schools in the area to establish what people actually knew about suicide.

Hairless Whisper

Moyle Park College, Clondalkin, Dublin 22

This YSI project investigated the psychological and emotional effects of cancer. The aim of Hairless Whispers was to bring awareness as well as highlight facts and statistics on cancer in Ireland.

Safety Never Tasted so Sweet

St John the Baptist, Hospital, Co Limerick

This project aimed to promote safe driving and help make the roads in Ireland safer for all drivers. The group wanted to focus on this particular issue because of the high incidence of fatalities and critical injuries that have occurred on the roads in their local community over the past 10 years.

Is your Primary Colour Blue

Rosses Community School, Dunloe, Co Donegal

This project aimed to create awareness of positive mental health and suicide. The group gathered information by looking up a variety of mental health websites. External links were formed with Work Link and Aware Beat the Blues who both gave information on the issue and conducted a workshop for the group.

Testicular Cancer Awareness

Beara Community School, Castletownbere, Co Cork

The main focus of this project was to create awareness about testicular cancer. The team chose this topic because they were aware that testicular cancer could affect any of the members of their group as well as the other males in their school. They also wanted to focus on this topic because of its sensitive nature.

This project team came up with the idea “Cancer Awareness for Teens (CAFT)” because they discovered through their research that it was a very personal issue for the class and people in their school in general.

Substance Abuse and Young People

Ratoath College, Ratoath, Co. Meath

The main focus of the project was substance abuse and the effects of smoking cannabis on mental and the physical body. Research was carried out using related websites and surveys were distributed to 3rd and 5th year students in the school.

Give SADS a Shock!

Moate Community School, Moate, Co. Westmeath

The focus of this project was Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. This was a continuation project within the school and the group wished to raise awareness of this issue by funding and distributing defibrillators in the local community

The focus of this project was to create awareness about healthy eating, the importance of physical activity and positive thinking in children.

Wanna Be?

Loreto College, Crumlin Road, Dublin 12

Highlighting the influence of media and celebrities on young people was the objective of this project. A survey was compiled and distributed to all students from 1st to 6th year and teachers. Drimnagh Castle Secondary school and St. Kevin’s College also filled out the surveys- which gave a perspective from an all-boys school and a mixed school.

The aim of this project is to create awareness of the issue of bullying and to communicate vital messages concerning bullying through the medium of film.

This project aimed to raise awareness in the local community about the issue of adolescent depression, the importance of good mental health and teach young people how to tackle and deal with depression.

Emotion Promotion

Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee, Co. Kerry

The issue that this YSI project team wished to address was the difficulty that young people have in expressing their emotions and the negative consequences that this can have on them. Their project aimed to promote positive mental health and hoped to create a positive mental health environment for young teens.
