Teams of social innovators and entrepreneurs from around Ireland were shortlisted to pitch to three panels of dragons in Dublin, Athlone and Cork as part of their participation in the Young Social Innovators of the Year National Awards. Over 7,300 students are taking part in Young Social Innovators this year working in teams to tackle social issues affecting them and their communities.

All of the teams made a Dragon’s Den-style pitch to one of the panels for a share of the €10k Social Innovation Fund, shared between the three events. The fund was created by YSI to assist teams to implement their innovative ideas to bring about positive change and to help increase the impact of their project work. Some also requested mentorship and support from the YSI Dragons in specialised areas such as marketing and finance.

Young Social Innovators challenges young people to work within their communities to identify areas of social need and, to come up with and implement solutions for positive social change. The teams pitching at this year’s events addressed a range of social issues including integrating multicultural students, dealing with stress in school, healthy eating, trans issues, farm safety and global mapping.

Teams were awarded a variety of different fund amounts, with some teams requesting mentoring or specialist training in various areas including marketing and app delevopment. Some schools received funds to cover the printing and production of promotional material while others aim to purchase recording equipment to produce a podcast.

Congratulations to all teams that partcipated in the YSI Den!
