Mental Health: The Ripple Effect

Davis College, Summerhill, Mallow, Co. Cork

2019/20

Project Goal

The aim of our YSI Project is to raise and publicise the awareness of mental health issues, organisations and solutions. We aim to make an impact on people's lives, and make a difference in the stigmatic and stereotypical views of mental health. We also look forward to link the connection between mental and physical health, and teach people that they are both equally important. We want to help and solve problems/issues, as well as making a friendly, pro-active environment for the mental well-being of people - with a specific scope on our local area, e.g. Davis College. We hope that our efforts will branch out further through Ireland, stemming from our locality.

Project Brief

Our thoughts to date: - Bring greater understanding to mental health and remove the stigmas surrounding it. - To celebrate World Mental Health Day through a number of activities. - Raise awareness and money through bake sales, badge creation, clothing lines, non-uniform days and other activities. - Donate to charities. - Set up a 'Mental Health Hub or Room' in our school - as a safe and caring environment for the students. - To paint the bathrooms of the school in brighter, more vibrant and uplifting colours. - To add slogans/inspirational quotes around the school, i.e. in the bathrooms, and hallways. - To place posters which contain information on organisations and helplines, for students. - To set up a permanent stand containing leaflets (about mental health organisations/helplines) etc. - To make a mental health awareness badge. - To host competitions such as poster competitions to raise awareness and build a community for the topic. - To investigate the physical and mental link in health, for example - a self-defence/kickboxing class for Junior students. - We hope to make Mallow a more mental health friendly town with these actions and initiatives.
