The Idea

The aim of this project was to help the school community and surrounding area to clean up the school's track, the condition of which was not very good. The idea was chosen because of its uniqueness and practicality, so the team could give something back to their school and local community.

The Idea

They recognised that the track was a serious health hazard to the students, especially the track team who use it regularly for training. Before beginning, the track was impossible to use due to overgrowth of weeds and the grass field in the centre of the track which had never been landscaped, causing the track to appear half its size. Also, there was a large amount of rubbish surrounding the track and hidden in the overgrown shrubs and bushes. Overall, the track looked dangerous and unattractive.

The team tried to involve as many people as possible on the project:

  • They met with Tullamore Town Council, outlining what they hoped to achieve, to see if the council could be of any assistance to them.
  • A member of Whitehall Residents Association, a nearby housing estate, came and helped out on the Clean Up days.
  • Green Schools Committee became involved, since the project would help them get a new Green Flag for the school.

They organised successful ‘Clean Up and Clear Out’ days where First and Second Year students helped pick up rubbish around the track and remove weeds. They were provided with equipment by the Town Council to assist with their work. On the last clean-up day, 22/2/2013, with the help of a JCB provided by the Town Council, they cleared the mound and heavier overgrowth along the wall. The Whitehall Residents Association sprayed the whole area so these weeds will not grow back.

The Impact

Plans for the future include completely finishing the clean-up of the track and decorating the area around the track to improve the way it looks. They planned to hold a planting day in late March for planting trees applied for from the Irish Independent. People who had helped with the project were to be invited to plant a tree each.

They had also planned to mark out the track so as it could be used in the future for PE classes and on sports days. Finally, after all this work will be completed, they were to plan an opening day in the school to re-launch the new and improved track and have special guests to come and open it.
