Intercultural Book Exchange

Intercultural Book Exchange

St. Aidan’s Community School, Tallaght, Dublin 24

2017

The Idea

As avid readers, this team of school journalists felt that books should be available to everyone in their community, no matter what language they speak.

Their school community includes parents and grandparents from different countries who speak many different languages. Their project aimed to acquire books that community members could read in their native language and share through an Intercultural Book Exchange programme.

The Action

They worked closely with their Home School Liaison Officer, school librarian, Chaplain, school parents’ group and student council. They promoted their project in the school newsletter and website. With support from the YSI Den, the team set up a designated library and reading space with books in different languages to support people to read in their native language.

The Impact

The team holds monthly coffee mornings and invites members of the community to take part in the Intercultural Book Exchange. Through these coffee mornings the team is fostering inclusion among the various nationalities that are represented in their school and community.

Through this project, these challenge winners have used their passion for reading as a vehicle to create a more inclusive community.

"Books and stories have so much to offer people of all ages and every generation. We thought that if we could unite people through books we could tackle several real world issues."
