The Idea

The team’s goal is to encourage young men from their school and local community to carry out a self examination of their testicles regularly and properly (Steps 1, 2 and 3). They also aim to remove the stigma that surrounds male self examination among male students and educate them about testicular cancer, its causes, prevention methods and treatments.

The Action

The team collaborated with the Irish Cancer Society to get relevant and detailed information and facts; As a group they educated students and staff of their school about the campaign. They designed posters, made announcements, posted on the school webpage and Instagram. They also approached local sports clubs (rugby, soccer, basketball and Gaelic football) to facilitate the message that young men should check themselves regularly and properly.

The Impact

Students set up fun sporting stations around the school hall that play on the word 'tackle'. For example, a sumo wrestling section, rugby tackle activity, soccer tackle station and so on. The stations were used to educate about cancer and self-examination. An end of  the day an assembly was planned where cancer survivors officially launched their 'dressing room stickers' that offer a step by step guide for male self-examination. A school fundraiser to support the Irish Cancer Society and its work was organised.

We chose this issue as one in three people in Ireland are affected by cancer in their lifetime. Testicular cancer whilst rare, is the most common cancer found in young men between 15 - 34 years of age
