Our team’s goal is to motivate teenagers to participate in sport.

Our Social Issue

Our team has chosen to address the social issue of the lack of teenagers participating in sport.

Why We Chose It

We chose this social issue as we as a group failed to understand why there were so many more sporting options for boys in our year rather than girls. When the teachers told us that there was less interest, we discovered by personal experience, online research and surveys, that girls had a greater tendency to quit sports earlier than boys. This project was then set up to explore the social root of the problem, and to try and change the social attitude towards it.

Our Goal

Our goal is to motivate and encourage particularly more girls in DGS and our wider community to get involved in sport and physical exercise, also linking into mental health and wellbeing. We know that this will help girls in maintaining a more normal school-life balance, help their mental and physical wellbeing, as well as their self esteem. Our goals are to create more gender equality in local sport and level the playing field, while also making sure that all teenagers, especially young girls, have enough confidence to put themselves out there and play a sport.

Our Innovative Action

We decided to organise and volunteer to referee sports matches for Junior Cycle students in our school, as well as fundraise money and donate to a charity that promotes Irish women in sport. We also gave talks to First Years during their SPHE class and organise events for them and Transition Year students for Wellbeing Week.

Our Impact

Our group has turned into what we hope is a positive role model for young girls in our school, as they will be encouraged to try their hand at whatever sport is put in front of them, boost their confidence and change their attitude. As all staff members are also aware of the group our work has done, we also hope that they will become more tolerant over time to their students, both male and female, devoting part of their time to sport.
