Welcome to Maker Workshops and Maker Camps at YSI Learning Lab

YSI Maker Workshops and Maker Camps for young people is a creative and collaborative environment equipped with tools, technology, and materials where they can explore, invent, and bring their ideas to life through hands-on projects and experimentation.

What can young people gain from Maker Workshops and Maker Camps?

YSI Maker Workshops and Maker Camps provide young people with a unique opportunity to develop critical skills such as creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and technical proficiency.

By engaging in hands-on projects and experimenting with various tools and technologies, they can gain practical experience and confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.

YSI Maker Workshops also encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, fostering a sense of curiosity and empowerment that can lead to lifelong learning and a greater understanding of how things work.

Scratch - A Great Green Space Workshop at YSI Learning Lab

This workshop teaches young people how to use creative problem-solving to improve their communities. The workshop will begin by looking at a specific goal called SDG 11. This aims to ensure everyone has access to safe, green, and enjoyable public spaces by 2030.

In this workshop, young people will explore why green spaces are essential for healthy and sustainable communities. They will also examine what is needed to make a space a great green space. Then, they will work together in teams to reimagine a space in their community and use a tool called Scratch to create their vision of the perfect green and recreational spaces for their neighbourhood.  Their ideas will be shared with others on a Scratch community page.

Through this workshop, young people will learn how to use scratch coding and creative problem-solving, discover their ability to make a positive impact and understand important things like rights, responsibilities, fairness, justice, and equality. They'll also see how they can contribute to achieving SDG 11.

This workshop is delivered at the YSI Learning Lab at DCU Alpha Innovation Campus in Glasnevin, Dublin 11.

The workshop is in the pilot phase and is currently only available to schools in the Dublin City Area. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Workshop capacity is 20 max. Students must be accompanied by their teachers.

*Scratch  is a visual programming language that makes it easy for young people to create their own interactive creations on the web. It helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
