YSI Gender Equality Project Makes Waves on International Women's Day

Representatives of the YSI Team from Maryfield College, Drumcondra are interviewed on Ireland AM along with their teacher and YSI Guide, Margaret McLoughlin.

A campaign launched by a YSI team from Maryfield College in Drumcondra has been making waves in the media this International Women's Day. The #whowearsthetrousers campaign is calling for an end to, what the students view as, a discriminatory skirt-only uniform policy.

The students argue that, not only is the issue one of impracticality and discomfort (when it comes to cold weather and cycling to school) but that is one related to diversity and inclusion, particularly for members of the LGBT community.whom the YSI team are very keen to support.

While the Management Team in Maryfield College has agreed to offer a choice to students in relation to wearing skirts or trousers, the students are conscious that not all schools will be as accomodating and are calling for change.

This International Women's Day, the project and the campaign has featured across national media bringing huge awareness to the issue.
