The Idea

Concerned about the stigma and secrecy associated with mental health issues and the impact these have on preventing those affected seeking help, these inspirational students embarked on a journey to deliver a strong message; that there is no shame in talking about mental health.

The Action

Working with a wide range of organisations, individuals and professionals in the area of mental health, these young people undertook a multitude of activities to promote their message.

Their community ‘Lighting Up the Darkness’ event attracted 500 walkers and every house along the walking route supported the initiative by placing a candle in their window to show solidarity with people living in darkness.

A second community event promoting physical activity, good nutrition, relaxation and socialising as key factors contributing to good mental health received huge support from local businesses, clubs and organisations. It featured guest speakers, cookery, yoga and meditation demonstrations, comedy performances, a bounceathon, and a tearoom promoting and encouraging conversation over a cuppa.

The Impact

The team’s original video illustrating the impactful poem ‘Explaining My Depression to My Mother’ reached over 27,000 people online and was shortlisted for St Patrick’s Mental Hospital’s video competition.

A positive mental health calendar, a strong social media campaign, the delivery of workshops for primary and secondary students, and a range of other creative school and community-based activities have all combined to achieve significant impact.

We wanted to be a beacon of light for our family and friends who are in a dark place.
