Our Social Issue
Lack of education on first aid and water safety. Health,safety and wellbeing awareness.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue as we had just come back from summer holidays and had seen or heard of a number of incidents where first aid was critical or even just helpful, and we realised people didn't have the basic knowledge to assist. We know from experience that this can have a long lasting impact on the bystander, and they can be left with lasting guilt and trauma. We also are shocked by how much first aid and water safety is overlooked in school, especially considering we live on a rural island.
Our Goal
Our big idea is for first aid training to be made mandatory in schools, along with water safety knowledge. We want our project to travel nationwide, and become a normal part of school life. We strongly believe our project will benefit everyone in some shape or form. If there is unfortunately a situation where first aid is needed, we hope our project can help equip someone with the skills to help.
Our Innovative Action
We completed surveys with all the year groups in our school about their knowledge surrounding first aid, questioned if they would like to learn first aid and we are currently organising a first aid awareness day, in order to raise awareness about water safety and first aid In two separate days in the school with the help of the fire brigade, the Garda from our village and Water Safety Ireland.
Our Impact
We have made a positive difference by raising awareness, starting important conversations, influencing others to take first aid courses, and giving people opportunities they may not have had access to otherwise.
