To reduce the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on third level students as it is affecting their health, education, and ultimately, their future.

Our Social Issue

The cost of living for 3rd level students.

Cost of Living Crisis

Why We Chose It

We chose the issue of the cost living crisis as all of the group notice the impacts it has on us daily - whether it be doing the family food shop, buying fuel for our vehicles, or hearing parents and relatives talk about it over our heads. We wanted to understand the root causes of it, and find ways to combat it to reduce its impact on us and our futures. We are particularly passionate about spreading awareness about it throughout our communities, and to students in our area as we find that it the most relevant to us.

Cost of Living Crisis

Our Goal

We are particularly focused on 3rd level students as statistically they are one of the most affected groups and we will be in a similar position in a couple of years when we go to college as well. We want to ensure they have access to the most reliable information, and that they have the tools to combat it where possible. This is why we are creating our “Lost in the Cost” eBook, and why we are spreading awareness of the issue throughout our local communities and online.

Cost of Living Crisis

Our Innovative Action

Before Christmas we decided to do something for local families affected by the cost of living, especially during this time of year, so we asked students, staff members, and members of the community to donate any non-perishable foods. We made hampers of Christmas treats and essentials worth over €600 that were distributed to the families that needed them. We’ve researched affordable foods and compared prices to put together easy to make, cheap recipes. These are being compiled into an eBook that we are creating ourselves, along with other money saving tips and tricks which we wish to distribute.

Our Impact

With all the food received by students of our school, we designed hampers for local families struggling during the Christmas season. These hampers were given out to the families a few days before Christmas and we were told that the hampers were greatly appreciated. We hope the ebook will give 3rd level students the tools to navigate college life. We feel our actions will help improve the physical, mental and financial well-being of the students.
