Our Social Issue

Community garden - to help with bio diversity, beauty, welcome and social inclusion

Why We Chose It

After much debate we settled on this social issue. We originally wanted to focus on helping the many asylum seekers that are attending our centre. We also wanted to brighten and transform our beautiful location along the Murrough. So we landed on the idea of making our community more inclusive by creating a community garden where it can be used as a hub for resources such as food and clothes boxes and ideas to be shared along with growing food and planting flowers. We want to bring back beauty to this neglected area.

Our Goal

The big picture with ' The Murrough Master Plan' is to create a community garden along the Murrough. We want to restore beauty, create bio diversity, have it used as a hub for all to enjoy with an emphasis on encouraging those who are new to the area. We hope to have food and clothes boxes too. With the Riverwalk Cafe we are helping a local cafe whos staff are part of a re employment/upskilling programme. We plan on making the garden as warm and inviting to generate business and for all to enjoy

Our Innovative Action

We have identified the patch of land that we can use for the community garden. We have contacted and visited Wicklow County Council and been speaking on numerous occasions with Lee Cullen who is the technical director. We have put him in contact with Eileen Cullen from KWETB about working together on this land. We have been asked by Eileen and KWETB Hospitality Training to design their training cafe to make it inviting and inclusive to all. We have linked in with local business to see how they can support our project. Kevin Reid is onboard for planting advise

Our Impact

This project has made such a positive difference already. In our own lives, as mentioned before we all come from very diverse backgrounds and the sense of community, pride and achievement we feel is incredible. We also have made a difference to others in our centre, we have reached out and connected with so many people in our centre who are willing to help as much as they can with our project some with super growing and planting skills. We'll make such a difference in our community by restoring life and footfall to this land.
